Catwoman Silver Age Costumes

Description

Part five of my Catwoman Costume Chronology.

After a decade-long hiatus from comics due to the Comics Code Authority, Catwoman re-appeared in 1966 in the rather atrocious "Superman's Gilfriend, Lois Lane" title. Due to the stringent rules of the code, Catwoman's costume was toned down and she was given a purple bodysuit. The suit featured a green collar and she wore it along with a green cape and white belt. Her mask also differed from before. The eye holes tapered upward and the ears were narrower. She wore this for her appearances in the Lois Lane comic but dropped it the following year.

Due to the popularity of the '60s television series, Catwoman adopted a new costume that was closer to the one she wore on the show. It was a green sequinned bodysuit with a sequinned domino mask. She accessorized with lighter green boots, gloves and belt as well as with cat ears fastened into her hair. It's also worth noting that Catwoman used a few cat-themed gadgets at this time most notably a "catarang." The bauble necklace she wore also served a function as it was used to catch Batgirl's eye and disturb her balance while fighting goons. This underhanded tactic forced Batgirl into defeat allowing Catwoman to take down the goons on her own. Catwoman would wear this costume for a couple of appearances before ditching it entirely. An odd look to most, this costume wasn't one of her worst though the sequins ended up looking more like fish scales than sequins... it needed some 21st century computer effects. ;) I'm also assuming the green was chosen in order to allude to her very first "costume." This look would have been cuter if it were purple.

A couple years later, Selina altered her look once more this time to something drastically different than anything she'd worn before. She cut her hair short into a stylish '60s flip bob and poured her lithe figure into a navy blue (possibly black leather) sleeveless halter bodysuit with a high collar and cat tail. She accessorized with opera-length gloves and buccaneer boots. She also wore light blue tights beneath her costume. A notable aspect of this costume was her red mask. It featured "light intensifier" lenses. Catwoman wore this costume for a handful of comic appearances (two appearances in Batman, her appearances in Wonder Woman's title and once more in a Batman/Wonder Woman team-up in "The Brave and The Bold") and was worn into the Bronze Age. Also, she was featured in this costume for an appearance on the "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" cartoon.

It's interesting to note that the Silver Age gave us battle-ready costumes for Catwoman. She wore pants and in her adventures in this era she took on a more active role in fighting off enemies. Her most notable appearance doing so was in her rather epic battle against Wonder Woman where the two of them faced off against each other using katanas and were on wires... rigged up by a third party forcing them to cut their opponent's wire in order to survive from being dropped into (I think it was...) a volcano. This was of course during Wonder Woman's Diana Prince era... you know the one where she wore all those super cute mod outfits?
