Final Fantasy IV - Rydia

Description

This is the seventh in a series of drawings of video game girls.

Rydia is one of the lead protagonists from the 1991 role playing game Final Fantasy IV. She is a summoner who joins the party after her village is burned down. As a young girl at the time, she suffers from a fear of fire and is devastated to learn that the party's leader Cecil was in part responsible for her mother's death. Over the course of the game, she matures and becomes a fierce warrior whose skills as a summoner are invaluable to the party.

Much like with my drawing of Rosa, I had to really simplify Rydia's appearance for this drawing as my style is certainly nowhere near as detailed as the renders of her. My skills are also much more limited in that regard as well. Still, I did my best to capture her overall appearance.

As always, please feel free to leave a comment below!

Enjoy! :)

Hi there! Here I am popping up out of nowhere again. I'm pretty pumped about finally being able to spend some time on dA. I've missed all my friends so much. I'm making my "I'm back" comment rounds and I can't resist grabbing this one up first. Talk about right up my alley with this fabulous fantasy lady. I'm not particularly familiar with Final Fantasy. I know of the game but as far as any of the details, themes or characters I'm clueless. It does seem interesting and looks like something I'd enjoy playing had I the time to invest. However, seeing your rendition of some of it's characters makes it look even more riveting. But enough rambling, I need to get to this beautiful art!

The first thing I noticed is that your skills with shading and highlighting are continuing to improve by leaps and bounds. I love how soft it makes her skin and garments look! And that hair pops off the page with that glossy shine. As far as your comments about not being able to get all the detail down, I took it upon myself to look up some images of her from the actual game and I have to say that I disagree with you. I think you captured the details of her costume beautifully. Really, the only thing I noticed that was missing is the pattern on the fabric and that would be intimidating to anyone. I would certainly be apprehensive to try it, fabric patterns not being one of my strong points either. And honestly with the way you drew the rest of the costume, the pattern is not really necessary. The folds of her cape on her shoulders are on point as well as how it falls behind her back in billowing layers. The bead work on her straps and hanging from her belt are well done and add great touches. Even down to all the tiny gold details on her dress you did an incredibly accurate job I would say. That sash wrapped around her waist is particularly impressive. And the boots! Those look killer! If I even attempted them I'd be curled up, bawling in a corner. That outfit as a whole looks so hard! Great execution of a very difficult, intensely detailed character.

As I said before, I really love the shading you did. Not only does it bring depth to her costume, but it really adds dimension and softness to her skin. That bit around her nose makes a huge difference in giving her face a three dimensional look. You drew her facial features beautifully. Despite being a warrior, she has a very calm and approachable demeanor about her here. Her eyes are soft and I love that adorable rosebud mouth! The hair is fabulous in all it's wispy glory. It adds a bit of spice to her soft expression with all it's locks tossed wildly about her face. I can't get over that shine you added! I makes the hair appear as though it glows with health and volume! And I know it seems out of place here, but I have to mention how beautiful the hands are. Her fingers look feminine while still keeping the appearance of a sturdy strength. All in all I love this piece! You did a spectacular job with it! So glad to be back to be able to enjoy all this gorgeous art work! :)
