In 1987, writer J.M. DeMatteis teamed up with Keith Giffen and Kevin Maguire to create the now-classic International-era of the Justice League. Often dubbed the Bwa-ha-ha League, this run featured stories where D-list characters hung out with A-listers and cracked jokes left and right. One of these D-listers was a Brazilian heroine named Beatriz da Costa codename "Fire". Together with her best friend Tora, the pair became one of the most popular duos in comic book fandom. Bea was feisty, fashionable and totally vain. Consequently, she's had a lot of looks over the years and I felt compelled to do a series devoted to those looks. Get ready 'cause we're talking a trip through Miss da Costa's closet!

Summer 1992: Following the massive Breakdowns storyline, Dan Jurgens was brought on board for story and art duties on Justice League America. While he reinvigorated the book by adding Superman and Maxima to the team, he devolved Fire into little more than a green-haired valley girl who said "like" anytime she spoke. In her first major mission during Jurgens' time, Fire set out on a space mission alongside her cohorts to help Maxima out on her home planet.

Right before the mission, Fire throws a sh*t fit when she discovers she's on the worst-dressed list. She's determined to change up her look and ends up in this odd outfit (which all her teammates are inextricably impressed by). It features flame-detailed black boots (and a similarly designed white collar) along with white leggings and a green bodysuit. She also has pellets on her gloves. Overall, it's a weird look. Jurgens must have thought so as he changed it following the Almerac arc.

Fall 1992: After fighting an alien menace who "owns" the Earth, the Justice League go off and fight Doomsday. Unfortunately, their effort is in vain as Doomsday makes quick work of them all and eventually leaves Blue Beetle in a coma. Fire does not make it out unscathed either. Bea loses her powers and quickly withdraws into herself and rarely makes any further appearances in the book (presumably to allow for the new members Wonder Woman and the Ray to shine).

Right before she loses her powers, Fire changes her costume to this super-revealing outfit which for some reason reminds me of Marvel Comics' Firestar. Anyway, it's a green suit with a plunging neckline held accessorized with yellow lacing. The suit itself has a white border around the neckline and has matching white gloves and flame-detailed boots. She finishes off the look with a gold globed-belt.

Winter 1993/94: After months of doing next-to-nothing, Fire shows off she can still kick ass when she attacks an alien fugitive who makes an attempt to rape her. The next we see Fire do anything noteworthy following this attack is when she goes to save Ice (along with the rest of the League). She's outfitted with a blaster gun designed by Blue Beetle and acts as Guy Gardner's back-up (like he actually needed it). Eventually, the League finds Tora and it is Fire who holds the League back so that Tora can properly avenge the death of her father (which I suppose is all retconned now...).

Fire's outfit for the brief mission to save Ice seems to have been a slightly reworked version of the summer '92 outfit. It features a full bodysuit this time (minus the sleeves) and has white boots instead of black. She completes the look with green fingerless gloves, a gray leather jacket and a gun holster. It's also worth noting that once she became powerless, Bea seemed to have lost her will to do her hair in the morning so she just started wearing her hair in a ponytail all the time.

Yep, she's pretty much DC comics' version of Starfire.

Do you mean Firestar? Because Starfire IS DC Comics.

I actually really loved her Fall 92' costume the best cause that was how I was first introduced to the character when I got the Death of Superman trade as a gift and thought she was a sexy green female Human Torch (I was more familiar with Marvel at the time, plus I don't recall Firestar showing off any leg like Beatriz) As much as I love Jurgans Booster Gold stuff lately, I have to agree he got her so wrong at the time. I wondered why she seemed to disappear after that event, guess it made sense the way that team got devastated by Doomsday . I so hoped she'd be drawn in that outfit again during Generation Lost, her Checkmate outfit is just so boring, even Tora is wearing a more classic throwback outfit, is was it based off the animated JLU look :-?
Anyway, great job :w00t:!

Well, Fire disappeared because she lost her powers and the writers that followed Jurgens had other plans with other characters before getting around to her.

I wish she'd wear a better outfit too. :( The one she wears now is way too generic.

These are not my favorite looks for her. I prefer the 1989-1992 look best. It was iconic and super stylish. These aren't really my favorite though the second one isn't all bad. The first and last are so meh.

It always confused me because the whole impetus for her costume was that the previous one showed up on "worst dressed" lists but even in '92 that costume would have been in fashion.

I know right? It seems like it should be the other way around. Her '89 costume puts the ones she was pushed into donning to shame as far as stylishness.

I blame Dan Jurgens wholly for that. His Fire was just so out-of-character. His art may have been the best in the business during the early-'90s but he definitely didn't pay enough attention to the way Fire spoke and acted prior to when he started the book.
