After all her hard work and dedication, the time came for Linda Lee Danvers AKA Supergirl to graduate from Stanhope College. However, her graduation would not be drama free. With Nasthalthia "Nasty" Luthor still breathing down her neck, Supergirl made the mistake of getting lax with hiding her secret identity. After spotting Supergirl go into Linda's room and seeing Linda leave, Nasty became convinced that Supergirl and Linda Danvers were one in the same. When two photojournalist positions opened up in San Francisco, Linda's cousin Clark arranged for her to take one of them and Nasty secured the other to keep a close eye on Linda. During one assignment, Linda was forced to enter a burning building as Supergirl to save innocents but had to destroy her costume and come out as Linda in order to protect her secret identity.
Supergirl was given another costume after a brief visit to Kandor. With a new costume in hand, Supergirl went full-force on an investigation of a theatre plagued by a monstrous phantom who had kidnapped Nasty and another journalist Linda was working with. Supergirl soon discovered her nemesis Starfire was behind the kidnappings. She successfully took down Starfire and finally managed to get her convicted for her crimes. Another investigation saw Supergirl looking into the mysterious appearance of a little girl in a window at a dilapidated mansion. The mansion was overseen by the sole survivor of a family that was plagued by tragedy. However, Supergirl would soon discover that the owner of the mansion had killed his relatives to procure their fortune and the mansion but the loneliness had driven him mad. Supergirl was also charged with rescuing a boy she had started seeing named Johnny after he was kidnapped by a group of aliens seeking to steal all of Earth's water. Her missions at this time were especially difficult due to Supergirl's continued problems with her powers. After consuming the chemicals that Starfire engineered to take away Supergirl's powers several months before, Supergirl's powers continued to be unpredictable and she was frequently forced to rely on Kandorian technology to allow her to continue to her mission.
When her previous costume was destroyed in a fire, Supergirl adopted another new look. This one was a blue long-sleeved tunic with seams that ran along the front. She paired it with gloves, a large golden belt and a cape that attached around her collar with a gold rope. She also wore a pair of pixie shoes over red tights that had a yellow line running down the front. Though most consistently portrayed as red, the tights were once incorrectly coloured as blue. Supergirl's hair changed very little from the previous costume to this costume. It was the same style and length.
