Green Lantern - Katma Tui Redesign by Femmes-Fatales Green Lantern - Katma Tui Redesign by Femmes-Fatales
Having finished a series of redesigns for the Justice League and their nemeses the Injustice League, I decided to do up a few redesigns of some of the Green Lantern ladies I'd intend to utilize within the series. The first is Katma Tui.

Borrowing elements from her narrative with John Stewart, Katma Tui's story in this re-envisioning of the DC Universe would see her acting as Hal's mentor and later as his lover. Katma Tui would be characterized by her no-non-sense approach to ring-slinging and by her by-the-books personality. It's clear that she desires to be the best Green Lantern there ever was and she works even harder to be such once Sinestro defects from the Corps. When Sinestro betrays the Corps, suspicion falls on Katma and many question her loyalty. She is assigned the sector Earth occupies as a supposed punishment and becomes the partner of the mouthy Hal Jordan. Though the Guardians view this arrangement as a trial for Katma, she comes to love Earth and Hal. In many ways, I can imagine her dynamic with Hal being akin to that of Olivia Benson and Elliott Stabler on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." Hal is brash and aggressive, often acting before he thinks while Katma is more thoughtful and caring but is still able to keep up with the boys. Of course, once Hal and Katma give into the sexual tension that permeates their partnership this signals the end of Hal's relationship with Carol Ferris. Unfortunately, any hope that Hal had of forging a romance with Katma is ripped away from him when the Guardians decide that Katma is ready to be removed from the backwater sector and assign her a more prestigious sector to watch over. This is naturally where John Stewart would come in. He'd be Hal's new partner and would likewise be trained by Katma... further romantic tension ensues and a nasty love triangle too!

Since Katma Tui was killed off in the comics before women started dressing stylishly again, there was very little I had to go on in terms of giving Katma a cute little costume. I took inspiration from her standard costume and used my redesign of Hal as the basis. I created a new look for Katma that blends all elements and really highlights a seriousness and practicality of the character I feel works really well.

Remember, all info here is speculative and is significantly different from canon versions. This is my imagination running wild. Of course, you can see the other redesigns I've done in my gallery too!

Enjoy! :)

No, there have never be any human female Green Lanterns. There have been for other Lanterns though.

Technically there has been a female human Green Lantern. Jennifer Lynn Hayden (Jade), daughter of Alan Scott (Golden Age Green Lantern) and girlfriend of Kyle Rayner (Green Lantern/Ion). She wasn't a Green Lantern for very long and was technically only an honorary Lantern, but arguably she still counts. And based on Green Lantern #20 there will be a human female Green Lantern at some point, Jessica Cruz. I think I've seen a WoG floating around that she'll end up with Power Rings, well, power ring, following Forever Evil. One assumes from there that she's eventually be given a Green Lantern's ring.

Ah yes, Jade. The Lanterns have never been my strong suit. Catwoman and Wonder Woman are more of my expertise.

It's cool to see there may be another female taking up the mantle of GL though.

I only knew of Katma's relationship with John Stewart. But Katma's relationship with Hal sounds like an interesting storyline. Her suit fits her personality (as does the others), pretty straight forward and functional.

Obviously, the aspect of Hal and Katma being together is my own creation. As far as I know, Katma Tui was a character who didn't figure into Hal's narrative in the comics as she was a character who came to prominence as a supporting character when John Stewart was the primary Green Lantern. I mostly chose Katma Tui since I felt she was a character who could really fit into Hal's narrative more fully given her heritage and personality.
