Harley Quinn Redesign Profile by Femmes-Fatales Harley Quinn Redesign Profile by Femmes-Fatales
For decades, the female costumed vigilantes and criminals of Gotham City have captured the hearts and imaginations of comic book fans worldwide -- myself included. I wanted to do another special series of drawings starring the Gotham Girls featuring them in a redesign (or in some cases remixes) along with a drawing of their "secret identity." I asked you all to vote for who you wanted to see first and that poll has determined the order of the Gotham Girls. In second place is Dr. Harleen Quinzel... otherwise known as Harley Quinn!

Let's face it -- one of the best things (if not the best thing) about Batman: The Animated Series is Harley Quinn. Her unique status as a comedic (yet somehow tragic) figure within the series has endeared her to many (myself included). While her comic book counterpart has done a number of unsavoury things which I'm not very happy about (particularly to Catwoman), Harley remains a character that I really like and am sad to see how the character has come to look less like a jester and more like a hooker.

I wanted to do something really, really fun for Harley's redesign. My previous design for her was a good jumping off place but the corset needed work and I wanted a better neck piece for her. I also wasn't happy with the belt. I redid the bodice to be more streamlined and made the belt look much more balanced while also giving her a rather cute jester neck piece. I am quite happy with the final look.

When it came to giving Harley a casual look, I struggled a bit. She's a character that I've found to not have a particular set style. However, I wanted something that was cute and playful but also effortless. There's something childlike about post-psychiatry Harley so I wanted to reflect that with the schoolgirl socks. I rather like the casual look too. It may not be as layered or put-together as some of the other Gotham Girls... but it's still cute!

It's nice to see a redesign of Harley that doesn't make her look slutty. Fan redesigns are so much better.

Sometimes fan designs are better... sometimes they're not. Sometimes fans can push the "slutty" boundary further than comic artists can though more often than not said designs are meant to be erotic. Either way, I'm glad you like the design I did here.

Ah Harley, who doesn't love Mistah J's personal cheerleader? Speaking of which, her casual look reminded me of a cheerleader for some reason.

Well Selina most certainly doesn't love "Mistah J's personal cheerleader." :P It's hard to love someone who slit your throat, drugged you, manipulated you and shot you in the shoulder. Lol.

It's likely that the casual look reminds you of cheerleader gear due to the exposure of the legs and the high socks. Although, most cheerleaders don't wear long socks. They tend to wear short ones. They also wear long sleeves at times under their "shells" (i.e. the shirts).

Well... I wouldn't call Harley's casual look the best. I think there are definitely some of the Gotham Girls who are definitely far more stylish and glamorous. Harley's look was definitely meant to really highlight her child-like attitude and place in life. She's not someone like Kate Kane who has her own distinctive aesthetic and she's not like someone like Selina Kyle who loves Italian fashion... she's a former psychiatrist who has a fractured mind and often acts and lives like a little girl.

The sexy wasn't something I tried to do or had in my mind while doing the design. I mean, obviously Harley is a sexual woman who enjoys sex but she's not a sex object... like the Arkham games' costumes suggest. But yeah, I wasn't TRYING to make her look sexy but since there's cleavage I suppose that kind of invites that kind of thing. Lol.

Hahaha! Well, that's cool. It just means that she looks attractive and that the costume is designed well. At least, that's what I'm assuming. It could be that it's streamlined but also detailed... but somehow less silly than her straight-up jester costume but not skankho like the Arkham costumes.

I don't think her arkham costumes are Skankho, lol I do like them. there's a difference between skanky and Sexy, neither one say Skanky to me. :p

But yeah, the overall look is very streamlined and designed well, if my girlfriend wore something like that on Halloween I would not complain. XD

There's a reason why people call Harley's Arkham Asylum costume the "Slutty Nurse" outfit. Lol. Both say skank to me. Of course, the same can be said for Catwoman's look in the second game. Too much heavy make-up and mountainous cleavage makes her look more like a Victorian-era street walker than a professional thief. Of course, Rocksteady are likely primarily white, straight and male... so... that's to be expected.

Kudos on combining the cuteness she exudes when out of costume with a look that doesn't stray too far from the original.

I remember being quite horrified at her redesign for the Arkham Asylum game. They had posters here on the subways for that game and I was really excited because all the others were especially beautiful-- particularly Pammy... *except that she was green. :P

Although, I will have to wait until my laughter subsides concerning the other women in the Arkham games. They all look like dirty Victorian hookers with greasy make-up and cleavage all over the damn place. Poor Talia got the worst make-over of all. She doesn't even look like herself. Although, Rocksteady did prove they could make gorgeous non-whore looking females with their alternate skins for Catwoman... the one of the animated series costume is go'geous!

that looks more like Nina from Tekken. Why is she blonde? Or is that just the lighting?

Generally, I felt like Arkham Asylum was a tinge "over-designed" when it comes to the popular characters. My one friend hates the default Batman costume with such passion it's nuts. (Personally, I didn't really think it was as bad as Harley, but meh.)

EXACTLY!!! I mean, it's bad enough Crapcom made Jill look like Nina but come on... Talia? Yeah, she's blonde in the game and it really bugs me because it detracts from the overall feel of the character. Of course, Vicki is also blonde in the game. I suppose they didn't want to confuse the idiots who only remember her from the 1989 film. ^^;

Really? I actually really like the Batsuit. Although, I do think it's a bit nuts that he'd be able to move as well as he does with all that armour on him.

Hey now! I didn't know there was a Vicky Vale till the movie! And that's an amazing movie. This nation lost it's mind to Batmania. It was great- lol.

How does Capcom explain the new Jill even? I don't follow RE. She looks sooo different-- like not like the same person. People don't seem to realize that with a fictional character, something as simple as a hair color change and new outfit can totally change everything about the character. -___-

On Bats' gear... do you know my black hole ass theory? Fictional characters pull weapons outta their asses so often, I've decided to explain it by saying all characters who wield a ton of weapons that mysteriously appear from nowhere have infinite-space pocket-dimensional warp zones for anuses.

That's how I was introduced to Vicki as well. However, I am well aware that Tim Burton took a lot of liberties with his characters and that they exist in the comics as a different entity. There are still people who think Catwoman is a natural blond who was a secretary that got pushed out of a window and got resurrected by cats. ^^; I still don't know what Tim Burton had against non-blonde females. It was like his women HAD to have blonde hair in the Batman films.

Jill was placed in cryogenesis and was experimented on by Albert Wesker. The result caused her skin and hair pigmentation to lighten significantly.

That's an interesting theory and one I would definitely subscribe to.

Commenting on Batman artwork can be a tad more difficult for me to actually do because I am generally unfamiliar with these characters. However, as a kid, I do remember watching Batman: The Animated Series and I most certainly remember Harley Quinn. I myself never really did like her though, I found her very annoying. However, I will not be discussing the character but more or less talking about the redesign here.

I know I saw this redesign somewhere in your gallery unless you took it down and reposted here. If I have already commented on the Harley Quinn redesign, you already know my thoughts on it and therefore I wouldn't need to comment on that. Never the less, reading the description box the details on what was changed is now noticeable as at first glance I didn't see much of a chance but it definitely works here. It stays true to the Jester motif, rather than looking like something out of a slasher flick like the Arkham games had in terms of design.

Now the civilian redesign. Va-va-voooom! My God, those are some awesome legs. Now, you know from the discussion that we had the other day that I love legs. And I can safely say that Harley has some good legs here, love how they are lean and shaped nicely. Probably from years of doing a lot of running, jumping, cartwheeling and acrobatics. So you kept the color palette of the Harley Jester outfit with the red and black and whites, but coordinated them differently for obvious reasons. And the clothing you gave her with the shirt, and the short shorts (my God they are SHORT!) and the school girl socks and shoes is definitely rocking. And the hair style, it definitely fits the character since it mirrors the Jester hat look in many aspects.

Awesome work here, man!

Well, hopefully no Harley fans (although I do consider myself a Harley fan) will read that first paragraph. Perhaps you failed to catch some of her complexities when you wrote her off simply as "annoying." But I suppose it could have to do with your own personal taste in humour and how that differs from most people's.

My redesign of Harley here is definitely different from the previous one especially since there are a few notable differences among the two designs. The first design (found here: [link]) is pretty much different from the hips up.

LOL! Wow! I didn't expect you to have such a strong reaction to Harley's casual look... mostly because I didn't expect any comments whatsoever especially with your aversions to all things Batman (with the exception of Huntress). I do think that what I wanted to accomplish Harley's look was certainly something fresh, young and naive. Like I said, childlike.

Sometimes I think I have no sense of humor. >_>; But often I am proven wrong, mine just happens to be either dark sense of humor or extremely odd.

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking.. You know what? This one looks so much more better than that one. Yeah, this one is better with the more detailing and replacing. This is one is defintiely better.

Well I wouldn't use the word aversion (unless it's directly with Bats himself) but rather unacquainted. Never the less, I was surprised at the casual look. Pleasantly so.

What's always been interesting about the Joker is that his sense of humour is really morbid. It often doesn't translate over to Harley but she's been known to be equally as dark in her sense of humour. I think what was always the most hilarious about Harley was that she was so... ridiculous. I still remember the hilarious internet short where the bad Gotham Girls compete in a beauty pageant and one of the tasks is to open a vault. Ivy pops it open with a seed, Catwoman uses her acrobatics and thievery skills.... and Harley just whacks away at it with her mallet. XD Oh Harley... (A similar scene is found in the episode where Harley and Ivy team-up with Livewire... it's an episode of Batman where Supergirl and Batgirl team-up)

Well thank you. That's really what I was hoping -- that this design would be an improvement over the previous.

It's funny... the more I look at the casual look the more I'm reminded of Lolita. I can't remember whether the outfit was something described in the novel or in one of the film adaptations...
