Injustice League redesigns, part 7 of 10.
Having asked you all pick your favourite Injustice League members from a selective list, Lex Luthor placed within the top five. Out of 86 votes, he received 9.
Lex Luthor has proven to be one of the most iconic and popular villains in the DC Universe. As such, the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies nicely to his character. There is very little that I would change about him in transferring him into the re-envisioned Justice League series I have imagined. His hatred and resentment towards Superman stays but is largely determined by his deep psychological feeling that Superman is a danger and menace to the world. Lex paints himself as the hero and whatever steps he takes towards ridding the world of Superman it is for the benefit of mankind. It is a similar rhetoric that many of the human enemies the X-Men have faced often take (okay, different comic book company but the comparison stands). In order to combat the menace of the superheroes, Lex forms his own anti-Justice League in the form of the Injustice League. He brings together a group of sociopaths who seemingly share the same goals he does. Of course, Lex is mildly delusional in believing he has complete control over his team and would have taken precautions to dismantle them all should the need arise but at the same time he is prone to underestimating his teammates. He is blinded by the feral sensuality of his deputy Cheetah and naively wraps himself around her clawed fingers, not knowing of her plans to overthrow him. That isn't to say he trusts her though. Lex trusts no one but himself. One aspect I would change about Lex is his long-standing lack of fighting skills. He's always hid behind henchmen and high-tech mecha suits so it would be fun for once to have a Lex who could just as easily go toe-to-toe with Superman in a mecha suit as he could go head-to-head with Batman outside of one. As such, I envision him sort of like... Crouching Tiger, Hidden Kryptonite.
Coming up with a look for Lex, I quite obviously veered away from his stock looks. No business suit, no mecha suit, no Legion of Doom suit. I was largely inspired by the rather spiffy suit he wears beneath his armour in "Injustice: Gods Among Us" so I wanted to create a stealth suit that would function beautifully for Lex while in battle. It would provide protection for him but would also provide the necessary tools he needs to weaken Superman. Lex's suit is outfitted with all kinds of Kryptonite weaponry from the "brass knuckle" Kryptonite in his gloves, to the Kryptonite dagger, to the Kryptonite smoke bombs on his legs and right now to the Kryptonite core that temporarily grants Lex enhanced speed and strength. Let's just say that Lex views Kryptonite as his super-tool (not realizing it's slowly killing him of course). I originally had more green worked into the design but eschewed it in favour of the sleeker combination of black and purple. In case you haven't noticed, I've incorporated black into the designs of each villain on the Injustice League so far as a way of not only unifying them but of also making them seem less garish and more like viable threats.
