Justice League - Batman Redesign by Femmes-Fatales Justice League - Batman Redesign by Femmes-Fatales
Justice League redesigns, part 12 of 12.

Having asked you all pick your favourite Justice League members from a selective list, Batman took first place. Out of 97 votes, he received an overwhelming and rather predictable 34. I'm sure he won due to the excessive amount of adaptations he's received and the lack of familiarity people have with the other League members.

In reimagining the character and the League, Batman would have to be one of those characters within the League who would largely remain unchanged. While the other Leaguers base themselves out of New York City, Bruce would remain fixed in Gotham and would stubbornly refuse his full-time League status as he sees his place as being with Gotham. His closest friendship with the League remains with Superman with the two trusting each other implicitly and with Superman often being Batman's greatest defender when he is absent. Likewise, he maintains a flirtatious relationship with Zatanna and exhibits a fair amount of respect for Aquaman. However, Batman finds himself engaged in combative relationships with many of the other Leaguers. Batman clashes frequently with Green Arrow and Black Canary as well as Green Lantern but his greatest arguments take form against Wonder Woman due to their contrasting views and styles. Despite this, he truly respects his fellow League members and was one of Vixen's greatest champions when they were seeking a replacement member following Hawkman's death.

A lot of recent designs for Batman are very heavy and bulk him up with armour. This trend obviously started with the Nolan films but I wanted a more light-weight Batman. He's obviously muscular and well-trained but he needs his freedom of movement. I imagine even light-weight armour might be a little too constrictive. As such, I imagine him wearing some kind of multi-weave fabric that is breathable but offers maximum protection. My main inspiration outside of freeing him from the armour that's been forced upon him in recent designs was in trying to associate him more closely with bats. That meant giving him a more constructed mask that alludes to the angular and harsh features of bats as well as altering his symbol to include the clawed tops of a bat's wing. I also gave him clawed gloves to associate him closer with bats. Overall, I'm fairly pleased with the design. It's both modern and iconic. At least in my head it is.

**Please note - much of the character content here is altered from their biography in comic continuities and is intended to be my personal interpretation in a series independent from the comics**

A pretty cool look, but when it comes to armour...most of it's REALLY flexible. (There's a picture of a German knight in full plate armour no less doing energetic CARTWHEELS in the stuff. And that's just the medievel period)

That said, it's your design and you can have as much or as little armour as you like. It works for me, being suitably epic.

This is, by my standards, a really old piece (you can tell by the flat colours). Since then, I've redesigned Batman once more and I've got another one coming down the pipeline. So… this doesn't really reflect how he'd appear in my head canon anymore. :P

Nice re-design, but I can't help but find it weird to see Batman without completely white eyes, or at least with black paint around his eyes to help disguise him better.

In an exchange between Batman and Catwoman during the Hush arc, Selina comments on Bruce's unshaven face. So no, Batman does not always shave.

You also seemed to miss the point of the stubble. But that's fine. I understand a lot of people are sticklers and are afraid of change.

Ahh, cool. It seems to be a rather popular practice to depict Lois as Superwoman. I'm reminded of how she was depicted as such in All-Star Superman or whatever that mini-series was called.

I must say I really like this series of pics, both the design and the stories behind it, I do have one small nitpick however (and this is a very very small nitpick) and that is the disturbing lack of plastic man in this league. Aside from that excellent work and I really hope to see more done with this version of the dcu youve created.

When it comes to the League's line-up, I wanted to do a modern Satellite-era team so those I chose for the roster were all members of that time period with the exception of Vixen. Vixen was chosen largely to bolster the League's desperate need for more diversity so there's a greater balance of women on the League and more non-white heroes on the team. Of course, Martian Manhunter and Green Arrow weren't originally going to show up since I wanted a smaller League of 10 members but boosted it up to 12 because both of them had been referenced in numerous comments on the poll that decided the order for this series. I mean, rosters are always something people get nitpicky about because there are always members people want around (like how I think the current all-female X-Men don't need Rachel and instead need Dazzler) but ultimately we need to respect the decisions made by writers and artists and trust that they know what they're doing.

Either way, I'm glad you've enjoyed the League redesigns. Obviously, I've been redesigning the Injustice League villains and they've been cropping up slowly in my gallery. The JLI and Secret Six are also planned but that's mostly contingent on whether my interest remains high in drawing more. Typically, my interest starts to wane when feedback is on the lower end (i.e. fewer favs, less comments I can actually reply to) because it seems to indicate a lack of interest on the part of my watchers.

1-You have a lot more self control than I do,my league is a virtual superhero army like in JLU so kudos
2-Green Arrow and Martian Manhunter are kind of inescapable from the league due to their mutual significance to its history so its not surprising they'd be huge fan requests
3-I like Rachel Grey, don't really care about dazzler, not that i hate her or anything just don't really see the appeal
4-Really hope you do decide to do the JLI and secret six in the future, would it help keep your interest if i favourited all of them?
5-Thanks for replying to my comment keep up the good work

Trust me, I have the same temptation when it comes to creating teams. I like so many characters and it's often hard not to create a team that's essentially just an army of badass women. I do try to be more decisive though since I think narratively it's smarter to try to keep rosters down in order to properly juggle and spotlight them individually and as a team. Of course, that's also why I "split" teams as well. That's why I wanted to do a JLI as an extension of this series.

Dazzler is one of those underrated characters who has often been treated like a joke character which mostly just speaks to people's lack of familiarity with her. After all, this is a woman who has bested the Enchantress, Doctor Doom, Galactus, the Hulk, Rogue (a handful of times), Wolverine and Colossus single-handedly. She's one of the most resourceful and powerful mutants on Earth but she doesn't really get the credit she deserves because of people's lack of knowledge on her. They just somehow assume she's a little tart who used to bounce around wearing disco balls. She's always stuck with me due to my perceived relevance of her character and the many trials she's had to survive. One of the things that always stuck in my mind was how Dazzler survived Rogue's relentless assaults in her quest to kill Dazzler. She was plagued by nightmares but after Rogue nearly killed Dazzler's sister, Dazzler had had enough and gave Rogue a thorough thrashing that ensured the skunk-haired gal left her alone for good. XD

I tend to say my series are largely contingent on feedback. I know all art should be done for individual satisfaction and that's usually how most of them start out but upon seeing how very little people seem to be interested after a certain point due to the lack of interesting comments to reply to I'm just like "Well, surely if people are just giving lacklustre comments that means they really don't care."

For those astute enough, the series of polls I have been doing in relation to DC Comics characters as of late are meant to decide the order in which I do redesigns for those characters. As such, many of the Legion members will be showing up in the Injustice League series.
