Justice League - Black Canary Redesign by Femmes-Fatales Justice League - Black Canary Redesign by Femmes-Fatales
Justice League redesigns, part 8 of 12.

Having asked you all pick your favourite Justice League members from a selective list, Black Canary settled in the middle. Out of 92 votes, she only received six.

There's nothing cooler than a secret agent and that's precisely what Agent Dinah Lance used to be. She travelled the globe carrying out covert missions for the government until an assignment went awry. This led to her resignation but it didn't manage to hamper her desire to do good in the world. She continued to go on freelance missions (with her Birds of Prey) but received semi-steady paycheques from a series of novels inspired by her time as a secret agent. Settling into New York City's Chelsea neighbourhood, Dinah Lance has become close friends with Broadway legend Zatanna Zatara and the two have since become members of the Justice League. As Black Canary, she continues to kick ass but manages to squeeze in time for some playful flirting with teammate Green Arrow.

I've redesigned Black Canary before (as seen here: [link] and since I liked that design I didn't want to do a total redo. I view this largely as an update. I wanted the fishnet to be less prominent and to have it be mostly reference. As such, the costume itself become more of a spy suit. The problem with Black Canary has always been that she looks like a stripper in her most iconic costume so it's all about finding a happy medium where she still looks sexy but not like she looks like she's going to be riding a pole rather than bashing heads in. I also restyled her hair to reflect a more sensible style and gave her a mask. I'm very happy with the design here.

Enjoy!

The other League redesigns can be found in my gallery. Check 'em out! :)

Very Cool, Very Cool Indeed!!! If I recall correctly it was the "Golden Age" Black Canary, Dinah's Mother, who originally wore a Mask. Though I always wondered why no one ever thought to give Dinah one, is it really safe to go running around fighting Crime with your FACE SHOWING? LOL :)

Thanks! Anything in particular you really like?

Yes, the original Black Canary wore the mask. The second never bothered with one. She did wear a wig for a while before dyeing her hair officially to blond. The wig was part of the disguise.

I think I really like the combination of Yellow & Black. For being called "Black Canary" I can't seem to remember any of her Costumes having Yellow on them, almost always Black & sometimes even Blue but never Yellow! ;)

Actually, every costume Black Canary has worn since the mid-'90s has featured yellow or gold on it. :)

It's all good. You're probably more familiar with adaptations rather than the source texts, right?

I'm a huge Fan of DC when it comes to both Comics & Adaptations though I will admit I don't follow Black Canary as much as I do others! ;)

Black Canary is one of my personal favorites. Either way, I'm glad you liked my designs for her and Ivy. If you get the chance, feel free to look at my other redesigns. :)

I'm so sorry. Fantastic artwork, as always, but, the awkward pose makes me laugh out loud every time.

I'm sorry but the pose you got her in... I can't keep a straight face.

Your costume designs are awesome and spot on, the mask is a nice touch and the mask reminds me of one of her old, pre new 52 costumes, so I had to put it in my favorites :)

Thank you! I'm glad you like my redesigns. The canon Black Canary hasn't work a mask in so long so it's nice to see her back in one sometimes especially since I think it works given the context I've provided for her here.

Only one question, who the hell is now running the flower shop?

There is no flower shop.

No respect for Sherwood Florist. No surprise. :P

Ah well, just give it to Helena Bertinelli. She could use the job. DC pretty much threw her away anyway.

The florist job always seemed like a leftover artefact from the days when women had "girly" jobs in comic books especially since it linked her a little too dependently to Green Arrow. For a character who liked judo chopping people and bashing their faces in, it was always laughable that she arranged and sold flowers for a living. You'd think she'd own a dojo instead. That would be a little too progressive for when the character first debuted though. Thankfully, Black Canary has evolved with the times and the silly florist job has been mentioned less and less.

Helena Bertinelli won't be appearing in this series. After all, I've done plenty with the Gotham Girls and Batman characters already so it's time to focus on others.

Then why not have a male character run said florist shop you seem oh-so-determined to see exist? :P After all, Oliver Queen would look so darling wearing an apron, clipping roses and arranging them for other people's weddings.

first thing that popped into my head; novelist/mercanery sounds like a great career plan. :D Otherwise, I'm glad you put her into something more sensible to bust heads with. Bulletproof heroes can get away with wearing just about anything, but for the others, a little more kevlar and a little less cleavage will go a long way. Even if you did get rid of her fishnets, I find it very cool how you kept the pattern in the sides and bust of her outfit. I saw your original Black Canary redesign, so I loved the bird symbol in both. Only thing I can do without is the domino mask. Back in the Green Arrow one, I said I usually have reservations against them this is why. If people already know Dinah Lance, the mask won't protect anything that helps conceal her identity. It makes me wonder what the point of wearing the mask at all is.

Thanks! Naturally, the fishnets had to recur but since it's done in smaller doses I think it gives off a classier feel. After all, she's a superheroine not a hooker. I should clarify that her identity would not be known in this continuity since that information would be classified. While the general public would be aware of the New York Times best-selling author Dinah Lance, they wouldn't know that she spent years as a secret agent and most certainly wouldn't know she's Black Canary. The government would help to provide the necessary cover to make sure their past affiliation with Canary would be known to only a few people like Amanda Waller.

I always liked your Black Canary artwork. This is an improvement on an already good design. Having her covered up more still works. A super-heroine can definitely look sexy without everything all exposed. And adding mask makes sense because of her past life as a secret agent.

Thank you! I think I've slowly covered up Canary the more I've drawn here but I still obviously want to keep her sexy. There's no way you can redesign a character known by the moniker of "The Blond Bombshell" without vamping her up just a little bit.

Please refer to the comment box. This isn't meant to be the canon DC Universe Black Canary but my own personal re-imagining of her.

Yeah I've seen that redesign, looks cool!! But I was thinking of a new redesign, one "similar" to the one that Joel Carroll made for Project Rooftop. You know, the one with the closed legs and open arms! What do you think?

Then it wouldn't exactly be my redesign, would it? Power Girl was a contender for this series particularly as I'll be expanded anyway but she doesn't quite fit in with the narrative so she'll be kept out unless someone decides to commission me to draw her.
