Justice League - Wonder Woman Redesigns by Femmes-Fatales Justice League - Wonder Woman Redesigns by Femmes-Fatales
Justice League redesigns, part 11 of 12.

Having asked you all pick your favourite Justice League members from a selective list, Wonder Woman placed second overall. Out of 97 votes, she received 15.

Wonder Woman is my personal favourite member of the Justice League and is in fact my favourite character over at DC Comics. I think she's an excellent role model and exhibits the basic human virtues that we should all live by -- honesty, patience, and compassion. She has a respect for human life and views violence as the last resort in a conflict. As I've previously said to some, Wonder Woman is a cross between Xena and the late Princess Diana... sort of like a Mother Theresa with a sword. She's always been a beacon of light at DC Comics and has become a symbol for equality in the world with many citing her as both a feminist and gay icon. After all, Wonder Woman does more than just beat up psychopaths and toss them in insane asylums. I've always felt that George Perez, Phil Jimenez and Greg Rucka understood her character best and their runs on her title include some of the best storytelling found in comic books. Of course, because she's not Batman most people haven't bothered to touch said stories which is a shame. In re-imagining her for this series, I didn't want to stray too far from the characterization established by Perez, Jimenez and Rucka. She's a brilliant tactician and warrior who puts her skills to use as a diplomat and ambassador of peace. While she's comfortable duking it out with the likes of Ares and Cheetah, she's much more comfortable visiting orphanages and refugee camps to aid the sick and abandoned while also preferring addressing dictators and diplomats via lectures and treaties. She'd also be one of the few League members not to use a secret identity. Diana lives her life transparently and to use a secret identity would be a form of lying according to Diana. As such, she'd be viewed as the most approachable League member and would theoretically draw more trust than even Superman would. Of course, there would be a division of people who view her as barbaric and pagan due to her religious beliefs. This would draw a lot of protests from people insisting Wonder Woman be taken off the League. In terms of her relationships on the team, Diana would be the glue that holds the League together given how easily she gets along with each member though she'd admittedly find Hal a little grating and would find Bruce mildly off-putting given her inability to trust him due to his secretive nature (again, Diana would view 'secrets' as an extension of dishonesty). Nevertheless, Diana's closest friends would be Clark, Shayera, Dinah and Barry while also maintaining a seemingly harmless flirtation with Arthur.

In redesigning Wonder Woman, I did want to put some pants on her as I've shockingly grown to like it. However, I know it's a controversial idea among many who would prefer her to remain in a bathing suit so to appease two sides of the Wonder Woman coin I decided to give her two looks. The first is yet another version of Diana in a Greek warrior garb. The other is a more modern take on her costume largely inspired by her current costume in the New 52. I'm fairly pleased with how they came out. You'll all have to let me know which one you prefer and WHY. :)

All the other Justice League members can be found in my gallery.

Enjoy!

I prefer the gladiator design, it makes it easier to believe she is Greek.

Both designs are awesome, I do like the traditional look as it is more inline with Ancient Greek armor which is understandable given her origins, but her pants are very nice too. The way I see it, the traditional is more for heavy combat while her pants is more "casual" or regular attire, much like how Batman and Superman have armor for when it is needed.
Recently purchased the first three Wonder Woman New 52 comics and they were awesome. So right now I'm gong through a Wonder Woman phase.

Thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time out to leave a comment. :)

I personally like both looks and that's really why I posted both. Wonder Woman is such a versatile character who has so much depth, so it only makes sense that she could pull off both looks. Hardcore fans of Wonder Woman have really seen the character wear the garb of a warrior when the occasion calls for it. It looks good on her. Of course, sleek and modern clothing does as well. She's more than just a vigilante like Batman or a superhero like Superman. She is an ambassador of peace and the ultimate symbol of love.

If you're enjoying the New 52 title, I'd definitely recommend reading the George Perez, Phil Jimenez, and Greg Rucka runs. Perez is largely viewed as one of the best Wonder Woman writers and his run really redefined Wonder Woman for modern audiences. Jimenez's time on the title was equally as great, especially after mistakes made by Bill Messner-Loebs and John Byrne. However, Greg Rucka's Wonder Woman issues are pretty much universally regarded as the best Wonder Woman stories out there. To my knowledge, the majority of these issues can be found on Comixology.

No problem! I do hope you'll check out those issues. As far as DC Comics superheroes go, Wonder Woman is far and wide the best.

I love your redesign of Wonder Woman. It's feminine and sexy but still practical. And the best part is that she looks like an actual Greek warrior. The only thing that I would change is giving her curly hair, but that's a personal thing.

Thanks! "Sexy" wasn't really my intention with Wonder Woman since I more so want her looking tough and warrior-like. Nevertheless, I really appreciate the comment and your taking the time out to write it. :)

Any particular reason why you'd prefer curly hair? Since Diana isn't bound by her ancestral genes (this rendition is meant to have the clay origin), she could have whichever hairstyle Aphrodite blessed her with.

your welcome.
And the reason why i prefer curly hair is because its just more Greek looking. But like you said Diana isn't bound by her ancestral genes.

Plus, modern society gives women the opportunity to style their hair however they wish. ;)

Anyway, many thanks for dropping by to leave a comment. It's really appreciated. Feel free to check out my other redesigns and let me know what you think. :)

Oh yeah I think its worth saying that when I said "sexy" I meant that she was sexualized the same way most male superheros are (all of them are not nearly as sexualized as the females but they still were skintight spandex that show off their bulging muscles). And they way that male superheros are is that they have bodies that are nice to look at but they are sill have little to no fan-service moments.

It's certainly a different kind of sexualization with male and female superheroes. The men are fetishized versions of masculinity. That's part of what makes them such an enduring fixture in the imagination of many fans in the gay community.

Well with her costume with pants I'd say she looks far more modest and not trying to get her legs riddled with bullets. A lot more in feminist(not straw feminist) stuff if you ask me

no. I think that she should have a red white and blue ceremonial dress/toga that she wears as an ambassador or Themyscira, the traditional superhero costume, with the golden age skirt, and a Greek armor with the armored skirt resembling the armor she wore in the recent issues.

This is the first time I've seen a design where Wonder Woman actually looks good with pants! Wonderful job! That said, I do like the left design more simply because I like the more traditional Grecian feel it has. Amazing work!

Yep! For those familiar enough with Wonder Woman, she makes the most logical choice for leadership. She's really in the middle of the spectrum between Superman and Batman who are too polar for leadership positions.

You're not alone in growing to like Wonder Woman with pants. I mean I love her original costume but I won't lie her canon redesign of a jacket with pants was actually really nice looking. I do enjoy both of your redesigns here but I feel like the one on the right is better for her to fight in but the one of the left would just be cool to see her battle in as well (if this makes sense)

I've grown to love silver on her as well. Not too bad. Also the wings on her shoes were a nice touch.

Hiss! Someone get the tomatoes! Someone liked the Jim Lee Wonder Biker costume! In truth, that one wasn't too bad once the jacket was removed. The jacket was just fifty shades of no. The ribbony things were a bit much though.

Seriously though, it's been fascinating to see the divisiveness these two designs have had. By and large, people have had a preference between the two. A lot of people like the Grecian-inspired garb but many also like the one with pants. When it comes to choosing between the two for the ensemble piece, I'll likely have to go back and see if there was a victor based on the comments. From the pants to the silver, I suppose I can count you as a vote for costume #2 here. :P

I don't remember the ribbony things (I have to go back and look at the costume) and I will say the jacket wasn't too bad but I must agree the costume was better off without the jacket. I mean I just LOVED her in those pants. I don't know why it just looked good.

Yes you can. But I will say I do love how you've drawn the other one.

Yeah, she wore these odd fabric straps all around her shoulders and arms. It didn't really serve a purpose and the aesthetic it provided made the outfit look too busy. As for the jacket, it was a big fail to me mostly because it had those god awful shoulder pads. You just don't put bulky shoulder pads on any character especially when they're Wonder Woman. Of course, the interesting thing about that particular costume is that it wasn't worn by THE Wonder Woman. The storyline where she wore that costume was essentially an alternate universe storyline. Mind you, I haven't read it yet (FOR SHAME!) but that's my understanding of it.

I like the design on the right a lot more than the left. I don't understand why there are so many people that were so upset when DC put pants on wonder woman. Your design on the right seems more practical and believable while you can still get the idea that it is wonder woman without the classic "color scheme/uniform." Personally I also find the pants to make her more attractive lol.

I don't particularly understand the big deal about the pants. The only time it doesn't make sense is when it's used as her stock uniform from the get-go since it doesn't exactly make sense as to why she would wear a costume with pants when she comes from a culture where pants aren't even a common garment. That's why I've envisioned it here as something of a transition for her where she'd move towards wearing pants as a means of adapting to the culture she's moved into. Though I do find it slightly irrelevant how people love to bring her appearance into the equation since she's intended to be a feminist heroine who should be known for her beliefs and deeds rather than her physical appearance. Unfortunately, female heroes are plagued by this trend of judging them based on appearances due to the nature of the fanbase (i.e. straight men). When Wonder Woman is given a costume, it should always (IMO) be based on whether it's practical and makes sense for her character rather than whether it makes her look sexy or not.

Anyway, I'm glad you like my designs here... or at least the one on the right. The initial reaction was that the Greek-inspired garb was preferred but later comments favour the pants so I'd say they're about even now in watcher reactions.

The pants are good. WW's pants were one of the few good things about the new 52, and then the fanboys made them put her back in the ridiculous star-spangled swimsuit. Your modern design is sleek, elegant, and has more than a touch of steel in it. I also like the traditionalism of your greek take too, but I think the modern one is better.

I love the one on the right more because she finally has pants (coming from a guy).

"But with her wearing pants she isn't as sexy" (someone actually said that to me) if that's what you think, you are just wrong... I don't like saying that people are wrong about things because everyone is entitled to their own opinion... But to say that she isn't a sexy and strong super hero because she simply wears pants?! You are just wrong...

The weird thing for me is that I don't know why sexiness should even enter the equation when it comes to Wonder Woman because that isn't her selling point to her fans. Wonder Woman fans love her because of what she stands for and because, to me, she is a role model. She's not Madonna or Britney Spears, she's moreso the late Princess Diana or Gloria Steinem in terms of what she stands for. The fact that she's attractive is just a side effect of the medium she occupies.
