This is an homage to Phil Jimenez's variant cover to Captain Marvel Vol. 8, issue #2.
After seeing Phil's cover, I was inspired to recreate it with Monica Rambeau as Captain Marvel. I'm a huge fan of Monica and am a proponent for her being Marvel's singular Captain Marvel (or at least getting the name back since it seems like there's at least five people using both Spider-Man and Spider-Woman - haha!). She's everything - funny, badass, and is aspirational. In doing this cover, I also realized just how connected she is to the Marvel Universe and just how many characters she is friends with as it cycles through her time with the Avengers, Nextwave, Marvel Divas, and the Mighty Avengers. Overall, this was just a fun little 'what if' kind of a drawing and really shows how cool it would be if Monica were still Captain Marvel. It sure gives me a lot of ideas for how I'd portray her within my own head canon.
For those unfamiliar with Monica, I highly recommend listening to episode five of Misty Knight's Uninformed Afro (mkuapodcast.com) as it goes through her origins, history, relationships, and hairstyles.
As an aside, an easy way of thinking of Monica (especially for DC fans) is to acknowledge her as the John Stewart to Carol Danvers' Hal Jordan. That pretty much sums up the two characters right there (though Monica is more multi-faceted than John [and she speaks French!]).
