Nubia - Multiversity

In honour of Black History Month, I launched a series on my Instagram account titled 28 Days of Black Superheroines. Each day I post a new drawing, celebrating the many fabulous Black superheroines that exist within the world of comic books. Nubia here was the first in that series.

Nubia made her debut in Wonder Woman #204 in 1973, predating both Storm and Misty Knight by a couple of years. She was introduced initially as a rival for Wonder Woman, but was later revealed to be her twin sister formed from a darker clay. As an infant, Nubia was kidnapped from her cradle by the wrathful God of War, who subsequently raised her in secret on Slaughter Island. To shield Diana from this traumatic event, Hippolyta erased her memories of Nubia and destroyed all records of her. However, Nubia would eventually return and proclaim herself the one true Wonder Woman. Nubia eventually turns on the God of War and decides to lead her people towards goodness and justice.

When DC Comics rebooted their continuity with Crisis on Infinite Earths, Nubia was initially erased from the canon. She was eventually re-introduced as Nu'Bia, the guardian of Doom's Doorway.

As part of the Multiversity line, Nubia was once more reinvented, this time as the Wonder Woman of Earth-23. Her appearance within that canon is as she appears here.
