This is the third in a series of character redesigns for an imagined Wonder Woman live-action television series as produced by myself initially based off George Perez's iconic run on the Post-Crisis title. Here we have Wonder Woman's beauteous and gracious mother Queen Hippolyta.
One of the most consistent elements of Wonder Woman's mythology is the presence of her mother, the Amazon Queen Hippolyta. Their relationship is always interesting (when explored) and are one of the more fascinating mother-daughter duos in comic books (what few there are). Queen Hippolyta truly stands on her own as a character and is much-loved by a good many Wonder Woman fans. She is essential to Wonder Woman and you can't have Princess Diana without her mother. You just can't.
When it came to coming up with a look for Hippolyta, I wanted to go for something Perezian (totally not a word but it should be). George Perez re-invented Hippolyta's look when he rebooted Wonder Woman's title in the late-'80s to make the previously blond white-clad supermodel Queen into a stately raven-haired Greek beauty. Hippolyta's signature colour became purple (the colour of royalty) and it feels only right that I use that colour for her as well. Where I deviated in her design was in making her clothing look a little more Roman by being more form-fitting and by altering her crown to make reference to the five-point star Diana wears on her tiara. I also decided to give Hippolyta a different sceptre. Typically she has an eagle at the top of it but instead I opted for an owl's head. I associate Queen Hippolyta closest with Athena (where I would associate her daughter more closely with Artemis) so it seemed only fitting that she carry the symbol of her saviour on her staff. I also gave her gold bracelets (she usually wears black or silver). She's also raven-haired. Pre-Crisis, Post-Flashpoint, Justice League and '70s TV series Queen Hippolyta may have been blond but I like her best with dark hair. It suits a Queen much more if you ask me and it makes the mother-daughter resemblance more obvious. Overall I'm very pleased with what I've come up with for her.
