Way back in 2013, I was drawing a series of Sailor Moon drawings and stopped shortly before I had finished it. After cleaning up my gallery a bit, I figured I might as well go back and complete the series. The second to last piece is this one, Sailor Mars.
Rei Hino (AKA Sailor Mars) has long been my favourite member of the Sailor Team. While I can appreciate her feisty anime counterpart, I've become especially fond of the sophisticated Rei from the manga and the stoic Rei from the live action. Both these versions offered depth in a way the anime never did. They treated her separately from the others and her personality never bled over like it did with the anime. Another development I appreciate with both these versions was also that there were implications that she and Minako were more than just friends. It further diversified the Sailor Team and even paid homage to the Greek myths that Naoko Takeuchi was inspired by. Across all versions, Sailor Mars has been a headstrong individual who has her own unique set of powers outside of her warrior identity. She lives at her grandfather's shrine and uses her psychic gifts as a miko. She even has two pet crows named Phobos and Deimos. The anime introduced a love interest for Rei in the form of the struggling musician Yuuichirou, while the manga/live action had her disinterested in relationships.
In drawing the character, I wanted to depict her in a dynamic pose that would show off her signature heels. I also had to make sure that I did her gorgeous silken black hair justice. In comparison to the others, I wanted her to appear more Asiatic. As such, her eyes appear more slanted than some of the others. Overall, I'm fairly pleased with this drawing. Also, in case it's not obvious the costume is largely inspired by the manga and live action version. You have to take inspiration from the best versions, right?

Awesome to see you do another piece of Sailor Mars here, and she so happens to be one of my favorite Sailor Senshi. I'm sure you probably know this but I have something of a childhood crush on her and I think you did her some major justice here with this particular piece here. So where can I begin as far as commenting on this picture is concerned? So much to comment on and so much to enjoy here indeed! Heh heh heh!
Let me say that I definitely like the dynamic pose of choice here, it definitely seems to be in character for Sailor Mars to have such a dynamic pose as she is often considered one of the more offensive fighter in the Sailor Senshi group. It definitely looks like she is about to perform one of her signature attacks, and considering that the ofuda is drawn out-- she might be ready to perform Akuryo Taisan on an opponent. And I can see that you have emulated a bit of a look from the manga here, especially with how long Sailor Mars' legs are here. Definitely a throwback to the manga style indeed.
I see that you have also emulated a bit of the live action characteristics as well, which I think works quite well here. Thinking about it now, the live action outfit of Sailor Mars doesn't really seem to differ that much from the manga or the anime outfits for Sailor Mars as they are almost universally the same albeit with some minor differences. In this case, I can see that you incorporated the jewel above the mini-skirt. And I really like how you decided to give Rei a more Asiatic look, although all of the characters are Japanese, the others seem to have Western like qualities. Still, it's a good decision to go with that look and it probably can be considered a nod to the live action actress, Keiko Kitagawa.
This is an overall good piece here, a very good piece indeed and now one of my favorites!
