Sailor Moon Profile

Exactly one month ago, I asked you all to rank ten of the characters from the first arc/season of Sailor Moon. The top five unsurprisingly consisted of all five of the Sailor Guardians. Sailor Moon pulled in at fifth place, which contrasts sharply from the Nakayoshi Polls that listed her as the most popular character from the first arc/season.

When I was a kid watching the DiC dub (hiss!), Sailor Moon was actually my favourite. This would eventually change to a near three-way tie between Sailor Mars, Venus, and Mercury once I watched the original Japanese version of the anime. Interestingly, I quite like Sailor Moon in the manga (of which this profile is supposed to be reflective of) as she has a more defined character arc and my favourite portrayal of her is from the musicals. Anza Ooyama slays the role and really made it her own. She manages to capture Usagi's multi-faceted personality with her excellent comedic timing and ability to channel deeper emotions like fury and despair during dramatic scenes. My least favourite version of her may be from the live-action television series, though mostly for the direction they take the character in.

As mentioned in the preceding paragraph, this profile is based on the manga version. The information and brooch are indicative of that. However, my drawing also attempts to reflect the anime aesthetic with her hair and face. Drawing in a style outside of my own is always tricky and that is no exception with this piece. I toiled over it for a very long time in trying to get everything to look right. Hopefully I did her justice.
