Secret Six redesigns, part 3 of 6.
I asked you all to pick your favourite of a list of six DC Comics anti-heroes that would form my re-envisioned Secret Six and Catman placed fourth. Out of 92 votes, Catman received 12 votes.
Thanks to Gail Simone's efforts, she single-handedly brought Catman from a has-been and to being one of the most badass characters DC Comics had pre-Flashpoint. Of the crop of characters I had selected for this Secret Six, Catman was the one that got my vote. In terms of his re-envisioned biography, it would be a mix of the expected and unexpected. Thomas Blake is a millionaire who comes from old money. He indulged in a life of luxury and played the role of a spoiled rich boy. He loved to party so he often landed in the tabloids. He quickly befriended rising socialite Selina Kyle. He admired her style and grace. However, their friendship hit the skids when Selina discovered Thomas' hobby for hunting rare animals. Unaware that his friend was really the costumed thief Catwoman, Thomas invited Selina on one of his many illegal hunting trips. She sabotaged the trip and subsequently left Thomas and his party stranded in the African savannah. While his fellow hunters turned on each other, Thomas was forced to look to nature to survive. He was subsequently taken in by the very group of lions he had sought to kill and eventually became their champion against hunters and poachers like himself. After years of this, a mythology was built around the "Catman of the Savannah." It was this mythology that drew Talia al Ghul to the savannah where she sought out Thomas for her team of special ops mercenaries. Though he was hesitant to join Talia on her quest, he knew that he could return to show his one-time friend Selina how much he'd changed. Thomas has now officially adopted the guise of Catman and operates as one of the more morally grounded members of the Secret Six. He enjoys spending time around his leader Talia but finds his teammate Floyd Lawton (AKA Deadshot) to be his closest companion. Despite their differences, there is a chemistry between them neither can deny.
When it comes to most of Catman's costumes, they always look like garish cat versions of Batman's looks. I wanted to try something different. I created a sleeveless bodysuit for him that is functional as it allows him to be the fighter he needs to be without a cumbersome cape getting in the way. His well-known colour scheme is still there but it's being used in a much more modern way. I considered ditching his mask since I figured it would make him appear to be a more serious character but it really works two-fold. One, it associates him further with Selina/Catwoman and two, it's the only aspect of his costume that really makes it obvious as to why he's called Catman.
Remember, all the other DC Comics redesigns I've done can be found in my gallery so feel free to check them out. Also, the information here is a speculative and creative re-imagining so it's effectively non-canon.
