Street Fighter - Chun-Li by Femmes-Fatales Street Fighter - Chun-Li by Femmes-Fatales
I wanted to take a break from drawing all of Catwoman's costumes to draw some video game fanart. Yesterday, I drew Ivy and Morrigan while today I opted for some Street Fighter fanart. Here's Chun-Li for you all. :)

Chun-Li's always been one of my absolute favourite characters. She's someone I've grown up with and she's been such an innovative character I actually look up to. She wasn't someone's girlfriend but a serious Interpol agent whose mission was to bring down Shadaloo. Unlike Samus Aran, Chun-Li's gender wasn't masked nor was it exploited. She was a muscular woman whose style of dress was quite modest. Capcom certainly does give its women a little more respect than is usual with other video game companies. Although, not by much.

Drawing Chun-Li is always a difficult thing. She has a very specific appearance. Facially, her eyes are quite obviously Asian so it's often difficult to try and get them perfect. Her costume is quite detailed and takes a steady hand to get it all right. On top of that, posing is very key to Chun-Li. Since I didn't want to draw an action-oriented pose I just went with her stock peace-sign pose. I know, how unoriginal. Ah well.

In my opinion, she's still the best female fighter in videogames.

Very nice! While Capcom has screwed with Chun-li and Cammy (IE letting Juri kick their collective butts) they are overall pretty good. The two female leads are people you can look up to (while Cammy dresses in a leotard her story is basically about a girl who learns a very unpleasant truth, but finds the strength to work towards a better future).

But I must agree that, for the purposes of marketing, Capcom does tend to shaft their two leading SF ladies in an effort to push 'the next big thing'. :)

Well, Chun-Li rarely ever gets pushed aside in promotions. They know that aside from Ryu, she is the real face of Street Fighter. Cammy does all the time though. :( Although, to be fair Ken's been getting shafted a lot lately too. He's the #2 male. Hell, I'm surprised Zangief never made it into MvC3 either.

Ha ha...yeah. You are right. I'm just bitter about that Juri anime. I mean at least let Chun (and Cammy too) put up a fight. Its okay to have them lose, but did they have to get so thoroughly dominated?

I haven't seen the Juri anime so I can't really comment. But if it's shown particularly from her perspective, you can make an argument that the fights are actually fictional and that Juri is our "unreliable narrator" similar to Humbert Humbert in Lolita. That means that the events of the anime could simply be fiction and that Chun/Cam took her down.

However, I thought the C. Viper vs Cammy thought was also crap. There's no way, weapons and all, C. Viper could ever take Cammy down. There's just no way.

There are good things about the Juri anime. As someone put it, "it is pretty good as long as you aren't a Chun-li, Guile, or Cammy fan." Juri basically toys with all of them and it seems to be canon since the game references the anime in the rival cutscenes. IE Juri telling Chun, "Back for another beating officer?" and she and Cammy go off on each other in dialogue for their rival battle. Plus Cammy does manage to 'rescue' Juni from Juri in the anime and her whole SSF4 storyline involves Juni in a hospital bed. It is very short and you can find portions of it on YouTube. It does have some decent stuff like showing a friendship/teammate relationship between Guile-Chun-li-Cammy. Chun-li, for example, looks right at Cammy from her hospital bed and tells her to be careful (or something like that) and so naturally Cammy later leaps up onto a plane taking off to go one on one with Juri in the cargo bay...not exactly following Chun's advice. :) Sorry for the long reply, but since you are a fan I thought you might find it interesting...

The idea that Juri could ever take Chun-Li down is just so ludicrous. I think Capcom does it purposely to give these new twats some credibility so that if anyone says Juri or Crimson Viper are crap characters they can say "Hey! They beat Chun-Li and Cammy!" It's lame and it's bullshit. Then again, when has Capcom ever cared about its fans?
