Supergirl Redesign

Description

During the first round of voting for the characters you all wanted to see me redesign next in my DC Universe head canon project, Supergirl ended up being one of the many characters who placed in the results. Given her name recognition and general popularity, it was surprising to see that she didn't receive too many votes. Still, I'm glad she did. kingziggy, Jyger85 and TylerMusselman all voted for her, so this piece is for them.

Kara Zor-El is Superman's younger cousin, whose journey to Earth during Krypton's explosion was derailed and resulted in her arriving years after her cousin's arrival. Her ship was discovered by American authorities, which led to a heated battle between the Maid of Might and armed authorities. She was taken down using Lexcorp technology and was spirited away into A.R.G.U.S.'s custody. With another Kryptonian on Earth, Superman made it his business to rescue the young girl. The Justice League stormed A.R.G.U.S.'s facility, fought against Amanda Waller's Suicide Squad and successfully saved Kara from their clutches. Upon realizing the truth about Kara's origins, Superman helped her to establish a life on Earth away from the prying eyes of A.R.G.U.S. He called upon his ex-girlfriend Lana Lang, who he knew he could trust with Kara's secret. Taking on the identity of Linda Lang, Kara was re-introduced as Lana's niece and started a life for herself in San Francisco. Clearly disinterested in living a normal life, Kara followed in her cousin's footsteps and became the heroine known as Supergirl. Since her debut, she's become a member of the West Coast branch of the Teen Titans and has become a beloved heroine in her own right, A.R.G.U.S. be damned.

After doing my Superman redesign (found here: fav.me/d90vmle), I decided that Supergirl needed to match. The result ended up being what you see here, which inevitably took on elements of her ever-so-popular valley girl ensemble from Superman: The Animated Series. I wanted to give her a look that was young, stylish and modern. I know I usually complain about flying heroines in skirts, but this skirted look has built-in shorts. No panty shots for this gal. The hair was mostly just me taking the hair she had in the cartoon and putting it into pigtails, while the cape itself I was inspired by ones she had in the '70s. The boots are New 52-ish. She's also a little Judy Jetson-ish, who we all know is fierce!

As most of you know, I'm a big fan of Supergirl. I've read a big chunk of her Pre-Crisis appearances, the majority of her 2000s series and the first five trades of her New 52 book. I've also been fairly pleased with how she's been treated in adaptations, which is rare given how often I grind my teeth over how badly comic book characters are adapted for film and television. She was cute in Superman: The Animated Series, was one of my favourites in Justice League Unlimited, was a standout in Smallville and her new live-action series looks like it's going to be great. I love the costume, love the casting and dig the tone. All of this is just background though, just to show that I'm probably a little more invested in this character than some of the others I've done thus far. I've also got to plug my reviews of her comics. You can find my reviews of the first four volumes of her New 52 series below.
