The New 52 - Black Canary by Femmes-Fatales The New 52 - Black Canary by Femmes-Fatales
Here's the sixth pin-up in a new series I'm doing called The Women of the New 52. This one is of the blond bombshell Black Canary!

As the leader of the covert team known as the Birds of Prey, Black Canary is a commanding figure whose martial arts skills are near unmatched. With her Canary Cry and her brand spanking new costume, Black Canary has been busting heads for the past nine months alongside teammates Starling (apparently an old friend), Poison Ivy, Katana, and Batgirl. Though it's evident that her history has been altered, Dinah Lance's personality and "essence" has stayed the same. Duane Swierczynski is writing the character so well I almost don't care about the changes made to her biography. :)

Like many of the characters in DC Comics' New 52, Black Canary received a redesigned costume by Jim Lee. By and large, he did seem to want her to look stealthy and adopted a ninja meets black ops aesthetic for the design. Naturally, I wasn't too crazy about the look initially but I now love it. It's much more practical than the get-ups she's paraded around in before. It's great to see her with adequate support. I can't imagine she'd actually be able to kick butt in a strapless top and high heeled boots... and yet she did in the Pre-Flashpoint continuity. Shame on any artist who thinks that breasts magically stay inside a top without any support while doing martial arts. I had fun drawing Dinah here and went for a more "action-y" pose. Since I've been showing off powers/abilities/weapons in this series, I figure it'd be cool to show Dinah doing a stylized fight pose.

Black Canary is my favorite hero in the whole DCverse. I can't adequately explain how much she means to me. Obviously this outfit is much more practical... but I still don't like it.

Great job with the pose, though.

Her costume improve very much on N52
- She has hidden ninja stars on her costume
- her fishnets can autorrepare themself with nanorobots
- pockets to store objects
- body armor that cover almost the entire body exept her head.
- No heels but light and pratical shoes
- Tight costume and still very sexy look.

"Older BoP" is pretty relative now given the fact that there have been three ongoing series and a lot of people would call Gail Simone's first run "older BoP." Heh. Is it Chuck Dixon-era or Simone-era? :P I'll admit the Chuck Dixon stuff is pretty forgettable and the title really never picked up steam until Gail Simone came on. It really flourished as a team book in a way it never quite did as a duo book. That's obviously what the new book goes for (the team vibe) and I'm really digging the new team since Starling is such a fantastic character. As I said in the comment on Starling's piece, I thought I would miss Huntress and Lady Blackhawk but Starling totally surpasses them in the awesomeness category. I'm looking forward to the retelling of Canary and Batgirl's first meeting in BoP #0.

In general I've enjoyed a majority of the BoP books. They're a bit harder to find around here, regrettably. But my dad and some friends had accumulated a nice stock from which I read from. Just before I was reading a Chuck Dixon BoP book. And I'll agree with you that the writing is okay. Simone started working on BoP somewhere around the 60th issue, if I"m remembering correctly. And about what you said for Starling. I adore Starling. She quickly working her way up into my favorite's list.Huntress I don't mind being gone so much; I never really connected to her like I did with Dinah and Babs. I miss Lady Blackhawk and all of her quirkiness though... hoping that she'll be back after a while. Even if only for an issue or two. I was disappointed that they added Poison Ivy to the team. In my mind she'll always be a villain... and I'm also hoping Big Barda makes an appearance as well. Oh, and Sin too. I have a lot of hope for this new BoP

The pre-Gail Simone BoP comics are hard to come by in general since they're a little more obscure and not as sought after. They've really only collected the early stuff into two volumes... both of which are pretty difficult to find. Obviously all of Gail Simone's run was collected in TPBs.

Obviously, Zinda won't be making any appearances any time soon since there's a new Lady Blackhawk who was introduced in the Blackhawk title which was one of the earliest titles that got cancelled.

I was hesitant to see Ivy on the team but her place on it feels organic and I'm excited to see it elaborated further. To simply write her off as a villain shows a lack of understanding for her character and for her motivations since she's isn't one of those "black and white" characters. Ivy's motivations are much different from most traditional villains and she truly lacks the definition many have. Like Catwoman, she tends to operate in the grey area of things and has often been an ally to the Bat-family. Yes, she has skewed morals but she's not off committing crimes just because.

I really wouldn't like to see Sin return since I never liked her character and felt it made Dinah go from a fierce and fabulous early-30-something to a more matronly age since she essentially was thrown into the role of mother. Given the fact that Dinah seems to have an entirely different history, it's safe to assume that Sin never existed. The only pre-existing character who was in the previous BoP who I would like to see show up is Shiva and that's only because she fits in well with the overall tone and narrative of the new BoP.

I have a few pre-Gail Birds of Prey issues...sadly not too many. I'd really love to own more.

Yes, I know that Zinda doesn't have a huge chance of showing up. Maybe the new Lady Blackhawk will come up later on. I don't really know all that much about her, but considering how well I've liked both Zinda and ( a bit less) Natalie, I have high expectations for this new Blackhawk.

I was more disappointed about Ivy because of my own feelings towards her. Ever since I was young, she was always one of my favorite villains and a role model of mine, even. I know that Ivy often wandering the 'gray' area between good and bad... but for me it seemed that she harbors a true hatred of industrialization and things that harm the environment. I really love that in the new series they've once more emphasized Ivy's hatred of industrialization and people who don't take care of wildlife and forests. I'm not too sure how joining the BoP team will help her with her motives, though. Then again, it is finals week and my brain is more than somewhat fried. I do, however, love her new costume in the BoP series. I think it suits her much better and makes her seem like an edgier and more dangerous opponent. She certainly is much more formidable than when she wore that green leotard...thing.

As for Sin, I liked the fact that Canary saved her from becoming the next Lady Shiva. It kind of touched me on a personal basis, since I know a few people who were adopted from poorer villages like that in Asia. Though it did kind of irritate me how quickly Dinah gave up being a superhero for the sake of being a mother to Sin. Just because she now had the responsibility of a child, didn't mean she had to quit her livelihood. ( Roy and Lian being proof of that). I'm still itching to find out what they made Canary's new history like. And as for Shiva, I'd love to see her in the new series. You pretty much summed up my thoughts about her before.

I own a few from the pre-Gail Simone era as well. I own the TPB which collects a mini-series and the first few issues of the original Birds of Prey title as well as a handful of backissues but the majority of what I own is Simone-era stuff.

I've never read anything of Natalie so I can't comment on her character. Still, I feel Starling is a suitable replacement for Zinda since she fulfils part of the role Zinda had on the team but adds a new dynamic. Her visual appearance also helps to add some diversity to the DCnU since there just aren't many character who look like her. It's funny that Zatanna kind of dresses like Starling though. She even has tattoos. XD

Hehe. Apparently you haven't read the solicitations for the next arc of Birds of Prey. The next arc will be dealing with why Ivy is on the team and will be explaining just what she wants from them in order to further her environmental goals.

Dinah never actually gave up being a superhero when she adopted Sin. When she left the Birds of Prey, it wasn't to raise Sin but rather to "graduate" to chairwoman of the Justice League of America. After that, Ollie obviously proposed and the two got married shortly after that. That obviously didn't work out too well for either of them. I'm glad that she and Ollie are being kept separate in this new universe. I've never liked that Dinah got so readily lumped into the Arrow family since I consider her much more independent. It still kind of bugs me that she sometimes gets lumped into the Batman family.

Well, you were right. Canary has just passed Ivy as my favorite in this series XD

Dinah's new costume is so freaking cool looking. I just absoulutly LOVE this new look for her. The whole thing just works really well together. I can totally picture her kicking some ass in this. I have to agree and say that this is so much better then her previous costumes. I mean I never got why her breasts didnt just pop out while she has jump kicking some thug either. I guess thats the beauty of double sided tape XD Im sure that its all the rage in the female crime fighting community. Im sure there's some supplier somewhere swimming in money :D

Now onto the art itself. Once again youve done Dinah beautifully. I always look forward to when you do a Dinah piece because I know that youre gonna do her justice. She is one of your favorite characters and youve never done a bad Dinah. Im not sure if this is the first time youve done her in her new costume, but it doesnt matter, you made the transisson from drawing pre-Flashpoint Dinah to New 52 Dinah flawlessly. The corset looks amazing and Im loving how seamless the lines are on it. I also always love when you do fishnet stockings. You do them so well. Of course seeing as how Dinah and Zee are 2 of your favorites, it doesnt surprise me you do fishnets so well. I also really love the new shoes. Its a nice change from boots, IMO and I think they go great with the new outfit. Im guessing that those yellow things on her forearms are where she stores her throwing stars?

I have to say Dinah's been a character that has really grown on me. I was first introduced to her in Justice League and instintly feel in love with her. So when I heard they were rebooting Birds of Prey I knew I had to get it, and so I did. That made me fall in love with Helena, but thats another story lol. She was just as good in BoP as in JL and I knew I had to read more of this fabulous character. I believe might have been able to find a couple BoP TPBs at my local library, but I didnt read them. Im the type of person who likes to start stuff from the begining and not jump on in the middle, which I know sounds stupid considering Ive done it with most of my comics, since I just jump on at any of point and dont read the back issues, but oh well. Im totally contradicting myself XD I totally should have just read those from the library and been done with it. Damn me for not getting them then lol

Anyways, enough rambling. I really enjoyed this piece and think you may have out done yourself on this Dinah piece. So congrats and I look forward to seeing the rest of this series. Especially Babs, I know youll do a great Batgirl as well. :)

Oh wow... your comments just keep getting longer and longer... I love it!! Let me just thank you in advance for this fabulous comment. :D It means so much to me.

Dinah's previous costumes are a physics mystery. I'm sure there would be a need for double-stick tape but I can't imagine that it'd hold very well considering how much she probably sweats in a fight. Still, if she got a super adhesive one she'd probably need a special solution to dissolve it. Overall, it seems like a whole lot of effort to just be able to wear a strapless top. Of course, it's even sillier for Wonder Woman since she has a super heavy metal breastplate.

I'm glad you like the art itself and that she's surpassed Ivy as your favourite in this series. The yellow things on her forearms are indeed for storing her throwing stars. Of course, I will say that this is the first Black Canary piece I've done where I didn't draw the fishnet myself. I used a special texture for it so I wouldn't have to draw all those damned lines.

Black Canary is an amazing character who has been around forever. There's so much to read involving her and it can really be a daunting task because of that. Still, it's a shame that you never read those TPBs you found at the library. Couldn't you pick 'em up again? No? The New 52 is also a pretty good jumping on point since she doesn't seem to be the EXACT same character.

Yeah, thats true. I didnt think about all the sweat lol. Yeah, WW is another I didnt get. Oh well, I guess they think we should just go along with it and not think about how their costumes should actually work.

XD I dont blame you for not wanting to draw all those lines.

Yeah, I could go back and see if they still have them, you never know what they have at the library. I mean I could see if they could order them from other branches or something...

Does your city's libraries have a website? On ours, we can search for books and it will tell us what branches have the books in-library. I'm sure you could try looking for them that way so you don't make a trip for nothing.

Yeah... I went to the library not too long ago and my card had expired but since I didn't have photo ID on me they couldn't/wouldn't renew it so my mom ended up having to renew her card and take out the books under her card. You should check the library website though and see if they have any of those TPBs. :)

I really like how you changed the color of the fishnet stocking to a darker blue than in the series to make the costume look more steathly. I agree with you on the comments about her previous costume not having any breast support. ( I always thought their costumes had built in bras just like certain types of athletic swimsuits!)

The colouring of her stockings do tend to vary in the book itself. I mostly went with what worked in my style since I tend to gravitate towards more muted colours.

It doesn't matter if their costumes have built-in bras because all that does is LIFT the breasts, it doesn't actually offer support or prevent them from busting out at the top. They'd need straps or alternatively their breasts would need to be essentially bound against their body.

I was iffy on most of Jim Lee's designs for the DC reboot especially Black Canary's. But after seeing it month after month in the new "Birds Of Prey" series, it grew on me. It's definitely more practical than what she was wearing before. Nice work as always.

I probably should've seen this coming since Dinah is one of your favorite characters that exist within the DC Universe, and you are doing a series with the ladies of the New 52. So it's not really unreasonable to include Dinah here and it's only appropriate that you add her to this series. After all, so far you managed to get down three of the Birds of Prey, why not add the fourth member?

Regarding this outfit, I definitely do agree with you that this outfit is a very cool design. It's a very futuristic appearing leather bodysuit (am I right to call it this?) that has a very intricate design to it with the yellow trims and padding on the shoulders, which is something that I happen to like. And I didn't notice this at first but there are fishnets covering the bicep areas of the arm? Now that is something I can definitely appreciate because it just makes the design look even more intricate with details. And the forearms appear to be padded with some sort of carrying pockets or padding? Assuming from the shuriken which she is holding in her hand, I'm guessing those are meant for carrying shurikens. I actually think that works and it's very cool!

My only gripes about this outfit is that while the bodysuit and the fish nets are appropriate, I'm not exactly feeling the footwear. I know this isn't your design but I think it's something which Jim Lee might've over-looked because while the design is very cool looking and perhaps practical, the sandals and the shin pads kind of detract from that. I think more would've been added had Lee given Dinah boots rather than just sandals. But aside from that gripe, and having looked at certain images on Comicvine to the best of my browsing ability, I can say that you've definitely captured the costume very well.

I also like Dinah's facial expression, and the way her hair is styled in particularly here. Great work, as always!

Yep! Dinah was a must-draw for this series! I've been drawing each member of the Birds so it's reasonable that I would draw all five of them. I've got the last member to go still...

From what I can tell, it appears that either Dinah is full-body fishnets UNDER her suit OR the suit incorporates fishnets in various places. It's not entirely clear to me. I can also clarify the yellow "padding" on her arms... the ones on her elbows is padding while the ones on her forearms are compartments. According to Jim Lee's design sheet, they house "ninja stars" in them. I like the design but, like you, I'm not a huge fan of the footwear. I see the ninja influence in them and assume that it's welded to the mesh fabric/stockings but I think boots would have been better. I do like my redesign for her better. :D

Anyway, thanks for the kind words as usual. :)
