Description
Part one of my Avengers line-up series.
This ensemble piece reflects the first appearance of the Avengers in the pages of The Avengers #1 and is a reboot of a project I'd been working on up until recently. I'm aiming at being more accurate than before. As such, I've gone with the original roster consisting of the Hulk, Iron Man, Ant-Man, the Wasp, and Thor for the first illustration in this series.
The five heroes depicted here reluctantly banded together in order to combat the threat of Loki after he hatched a plan to enact revenge on his half-brother Thor. Dubbing themselves the Avengers, this group stayed together in order to combat such threats as the illusion-casting Space Phantom, the time-travelling Kang, and the nefarious Baron Zemo and the Masters of Evil. They were also responsible for caring for Captain America after he was discovered, encased in ice, by an Eskimo tribe.
Unlike the X-Men or the Fantastic Four, the Avengers were a much more volatile band of heroes. They weren't a family nor did they have anything that bonded them together, so this meant they were prone to in-fighting. They all had lives outside of the team and this often made it difficult to commit to staying together. The Hulk was an early departure from this era and he was swiftly replaced by Captain America.
Despite the short-lived nature of this line-up, it remains an enduring and iconic roster that has the nostalgic factor going for it. As such, I wanted to capture that aspect of the characters. They're so colourful and legendary, so it was important to stay faithful to the essence of who they are visually.

The nostalgia is real. 
Of the characters in this pic, I think Wasp and Iron Man are my favorites. I've always had a fondness for Tony's classic, clunky suits of armor, and Jan's pose here is just really charming
