Here's the completed ensemble piece assembling all eight of the '90s X-Women pin-ups along with the Jim Lee-designed Dazzler piece from my Dazzler Costume Chronology. These are nine of the female members of the X-Men (or X-Men spin-off teams) as they appeared in the '90s. In case you all need a refresher, here's the roster...
Polaris (Lorna Dane) is a green-haired mutant whose beauty is only matched by her intelligence and sass. She possesses the ability to control magnetic fields and the uncanny ability to perk Havok up whenever he's thrown himself a pity party.
Rogue is a skunk-haired mutant who speaks in a Southern drawl and is most often incorrectly cited as a Southern Belle. Her abilities include absorbing the memories, abilities, and skills of others through touch. She's most remembered for her attempted murders of Carol Danvers (re: Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel) and Dazzler, having powers that aren't actually hers, and with her relationship to fellow Southerner Gambit (AKA Remy Lebeau).
Jean Grey (she's too fierce for a codename) is a flame-haired mutant whose telekinesis and telepathy are nigh unmatched. She's got a temper on her that's worse than Joan Crawford's ("NO WIRE HANGERS EVER!!!") but she's got a heart of gold and is often seen acting den mother to the other X-Men. She's best friends with Storm, close friends with so-in-the-closet Iceman and is most associated with her infamous love triangle with Cyclops and Wolverine (who were really interested in each other).
Psylocke (Betsy Braddock) is a violet-haired psychic diva whose past professions include being both a spy and a supermodel. She's a catty ninja who can fry your brains with her psychic knife and still have enough time for tea afterwards. She's close friends with Wolverine and went through a phase where she pursued Cyclops (them telepathic ladies sure like their men uptight) before eventually settling into a relationship with fellow friend Dazzler's sloppy seconds, Warren Worthington AKA Angel.
Dazzler (Alison Blaire) is a mutant songstress whose gaytastic ability is the creation and emission of light. She can create holographic images, flashes of light, laser beams, and more, making her one of the most versatile mutants going. She's dated doctors, actors, mutant heroes and a three-fingered mutate with a mullet *shivers* (she married that last one). This fierce diva has the honour of being the only female X-Man to hold a solo series for more than two years and has also taken on the likes of the Enchantress, Doctor Doom, the Hulk, Galactus, Wolverine, and Colossus single-handedly and lived to tell the tale.
Storm (Ororo Munroe) is a snow-haired pseudo-goddess whose fabulous mutant ability to control weather makes her one of the most powerful people in the Marvel Universe. Despite a phase where she didn't like wearing clothes, Storm is a fashion-loving lady who seemingly loves to hear herself talk... so she makes sure to speak a lot and with lots of big words. She's one of the best (if not the best) leaders the X-Men have ever had and even Wolverine bends to her will. No one wants to cross her... after all, who wants a lightning bolt up their ass?
Jubilee (Jubilation Lee) is a snarky and spunky mutant who could formerly create plasma energy that manifested like fireworks. She was Wolverine's sidekick for a heckuva long time and her general job description was mostly making fun of stuff. She's a fan-favourite despite her initial status as a mom jean wearer (who didn't wear mom jeans in the '90s?!).
Shadowcat (Kitty Pryde) is that chick who called Professor Xavier a jerk and then acted like a snob towards all the other kids at school. She's also known for her hormonal mood swings and her rather creepy pursuit of Colossus during the '80s (she was 13, he was around 20... ew much?). As she grew older, she left the X-Men and did the superhero thing in England with Nightcrawler. Oh yeah, her powers are that she can walk through walls. Fun. Just means she won't be a major player in a video game anytime soon.
Siryn (Theresa Rourke-Cassidy) is a spunky red-headed gal who hails from the United Kingdom. She has the ability to generate a high-frequency "scream" which enables her to fly and shatter all kinds of metals. She can also hypnotize and seduce others with her voice. After a brief stint as a criminal, she became a hero as part of Cable's X-Force unit. While with the team she dealt with her alcoholism and eventually became team leader.
That's about it.
I had fun drawing all these ladies in their '90s looks. Originally, I'd only intended to draw those only on the X-Men but decided to have "ambassadors" from the other X-teams from this period -- hence why Polaris (from X-Factor), Kitty (from Excalibur) and Siryn (from X-Force) ended up being drawn. Kitty was chosen by my watchers while the other two were chosen by myself. Those who know me know my favourite X-ladies are Storm, Dazzler, Psylocke, and Jean Grey. Remember, you can find all of them individually in my gallery in case you want to fav your favourites.
This is one of my favourite drawings of yours; I loved the 90's X-Men cartoon. I adore Jubilee's costume and personality, and this is the best costume of Storm's.
Why is she your favourite X-Man? I always try and find out why people like her so much when she's clearly inconsistently written and pretty clichéd as a character. I tend to get "because she's pretty" or "because of her relationship to Gambit" whenever I ask people why they like her. XD They always seem like such superficial reasons for liking a character.
I don't like her because of either. I like her for her character, her history, and her background. And because she's far from a perfect character. I like her powers and contribution to the group, which makes her my favorite X-men.
Got, I hate it when people do that. It's like Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter series. "He's so hot" does not make him a compelling or interesting character, but it does get a batch of lusting fangirls in the oven.
Her relationship with Gambit is cool, but I knew Rogue long before I knew about their romance, so I always found her cool with or without him.
I think the most common things I tend to find people say they like are her looks (which I've previously mentioned), her being Southern (often inaccurately calling her a Southern Belle which is an impossibility given her social and economical standing), her relationship to Gambit (again, another thing I've mentioned) and her powers. Now, her powers are an interesting thing since fans appear to be very fickle or limited as to why they like her powers. There are many so-called fans who love Rogue not for her standard absorption powers but for her stolen Ms. Marvel powers. When they give those powers as a reason to like Rogue, they aren't liking something tangible and permanent about her character. Many also cite the lack of control over her powers as a reason they love her... but do they still love her now that she can control them? I feel like people should like a character regardless of if they have powers or not... I think they can enhance and encourage the liking of a character but if you like the powers more than the actual character and your liking them depends on them having those powers I think that's iffy. It's obvious that you have a firmer grasp on Rogue than most other people.
I think my issue isn't really with Rogue herself but her more uneducated fanboys/fangirls who seem to wear Rogue-coloured glasses and really only know her cartoon/film counterparts and also I think the writers are really what keep me at a distance. I find a lot of inconsistency in her as well as a lot of hypocrisy. She has treated Mystique, Gambit and Emma Frost poorly in the past for their less-than-savoury pasts but doesn't really extend them the courtesy everyone seems to extend to her sometimes. What I mean perhaps is that she's extremely judgemental when she shouldn't be. She gets up on her high horse and acts like she's so much more morally strong than those around her (she was particularly preachy during the Jim Lee era when she was all "Oh Magneto! Stop being bad!") Meanwhile, I still remember her trying to rip off Dazzler's head and tossing Carol off a bridge without any identification because she thought she'd successfully killed her. XD XD XD I think that writers and fans ignore her past for the most part and seem to believe that Rogue was this victim who was easily manipulated by Mystique when in reality she went after Carol WITHOUT Mystique's knowledge and Mystique explicitly forbid her from going after Dazzler. Lol. I think there are really degrees of Rogue being well-written. By and large, she was fascinating as a supervillain and wished she could have remained so for longer. However, she was decently written by Claremont (even if it was OOC to how she had been before) during the '80s and was even quite consistent for most of the '90s but was gradually written rather strangely after she left Gambit to die in the Antarctic... and now she's written rather blandly (at least from what I've read) in X-Men: Legacy.
We're all allowed to have opinions though and I still feel there are more deserving X-Men out there who need love from fans that Rogue seems to get without really having to do much at all. Dazzler has been stuck on the D-list for decades despite her multi-dimensional personality and her social relevance (in a celebrity obsessed culture). But yeah... people don't have to agree on who they like. Most people agree to disagree on a lot of things.
And one thing more, Dazzler does deserve more fans. But it's not like Rogue doesn't deserve the fans she gets. She's a good character, and she's been a consistent member to the X-men. I don't believe that any X-man, well, perhaps save a few, is more deserving than another. I think she just needs the right kind of writer for her character. I think the reason she acts so high and mighty all the time is because the writers forget her backstory too, and since she's been a big part of the X-men, use her as a device to remind us about other people's faults. Yeah....
Rogue is my favorite X-man.
