The most iconic and influential superheroine of all-time is Wonder Woman. Debuting in 1941, this feminist icon stood for truth, love and equality. She would capture the imaginations of many throughout the years with her unique star-spangled shorts and gold-plated bodice. To pay tribute to the ultimate superheroine, I will be documenting the many looks Princess Diana has worn over her long and illustrious career as Wonder Woman. So sit back and enjoy a trip through time. :D

January 1950-August 1968 - After a decade of fighting crooks and spies, Wonder Woman's career took a turn for the worst. The return of the soldier's from World War II brought along with it a movement which is often called the "Back To The Kitchen Movement" which sought to remove women from the workforce and place them back in the house "where they belonged." This had a major impact on comics at the time and coupled along with the new Comics Code Authority, Wonder Woman was now a significantly altered character. Her Cold War-era adventures were mostly concerned with Wonder Woman coming up against all kinds of guys who wanted to marry her. Along with that, she began to moon even more over Steve Trevor. In fact, it could be argued she cared more about marrying Steve than doing her job as Wonder Woman. Also during this time, DC Comics introduced a plethora of Wonder Woman family members and inserted them into adventures -- Wonder Queen (i.e. Hippolyte), Wonder Tot and Wonder Girl all made their debuts. This was all likely done to make Wonder Woman more kid-friendly and enable her book to get authorized for sale. Sexism was at its peak during this time and Wonder Woman suffered the ultimate insult.... rather than becoming an equal to male heroes she was appointed secretary of the newly formed Justice League of America. Seriously guys? Wonder Woman could snap every single member of the Justice League's backs without breaking a sweat and she was their secretary?!?! Eff you DC! Anyway, Wonder Woman somehow made it into the '60s and the women's liberation movement was in full swing. With Wonder Woman clearly being a relic of the 1950s, DC Comics got off their asses and hired someone who would give Wonder Woman some respect.... more on that soon...

Her costume during this period was fairly similar to the previous with small alterations. She wore a larger tiara, grew her hair out a bit and the eagle began to spread out a little more. Eventually it became a little more abstract and its feet disappeared entirely. The shorts also were shortened. The most notable difference though is that Wonder Woman started wearing red high heels (or flats, depending on the writer) which were held up by red ribbons.

Diana Prince's look also evolved. Her uniform became more elaborate and form-fitting with belts, pockets and seams being drawn. She began to wear less grandmother-like shoes and her glasses were more trendy. She also finally let her hair down from its schoolmarm bun.

Oy, the secretary years. That was so demeaning. Thank God, we've come a long way since then.
...Would they REALLY even need a secretary, anyway? They should have had a sidekick do that lol.

Your drawings here are gorgeous. She looks fantastic in both. Though the ribboned shoes aren't my favorite look though.

They would have needed a secretary to handle certain things but Wonder Woman shouldn't have been doing that. It was her day-job so why would she CONTINUE to do it when she's Wonder Woman?

Yeah, I don't like the ribbon shoes either. And I don't like open-toe shoes for her. It's kind of ridiculous to imagine her kicking people without the proper foot protection. She's not invincible like Superman.

I'm sure a regular citizen would have gladly taken Diana's secretary job. If Bruce was paying for it you know it would be a damn good job.

Ow, I just imagined kicking steel with open-toed shoes. *shudder*

Well Batman wasn't a member at that point. But I'm sure she could have asked Etta Candy to do the job for her. And how many superhero girlfriends were there?! Although, Sue Dibny later fulfilled that role a bit during the JLE run.

Yeah, I hate it when people forget Diana's not like Superman in terms of her skin. Why does she do bullets and bracelets? Because she'd get shot if she didn't.

Y'know you'd think that they would have thought of hiring Etta. It makes more sense than keeping the most powerful Amazon behind a desk answering phone calls or whatever. *face palm*

I was under the impression that she was the secretary for the Justice Society, rather than the Justice League.

She's cited as both. Doesn't matter much as it's the same sexist crap, just a different pile.
