Here's a quick illustration of Stargirl as she appeared in the pages of Justice Society of America prior to the New 52 relaunch.
Upon finding the equipment belonging to the original Star-Spangled Kid, teenager Courtney Whitmore took up the mantle and fought crime as a member of the modern age Justice Society of America. As a legacy hero, she had the responsibility of living up to her predecessor's reputation while carving out her own unique identity. Courtney was eventually gifted with the powerful Cosmic Staff and changed her codename to Stargirl, thus becoming one of the JSA's most valued members.
For the most part, the Justice Society has remained a relatively obscure team in comparison to their more famous sister group the Justice League. Despite this, Stargirl has gone on to arguably become its most recognizable and popular member. She's appeared in the animated adaptations Justice League Unlimited, Batman: The Brave & The Bold, and Justice League Action, along with live action appearances in Smallville and Legends of Tomorrow. In the comics, she's also been a member of the Justice League, during which time she developed a bond with Martian Manhunter.
